TIME WELL SPENT

When was the last time you read to your child or grandchild?  Now that they can read for themselves do you still indulge in snuggle time, sharing the love of reading?  Are you inspiring their young minds into discovering that the written word can take them places television only wishes it could replicate?  You can add enthusiasm, silly voices, make the words jump off the page.  Make them hunger to find out what happens next.  One of my fondest memories is of my mother reading at bedtime to me.  One of my favorites was “Raggedy Ann and Andy’s, The camel with the wrinkled knees.”         I think I can still recite by heart, “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?,  Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb,  Old Hat New Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and Inside, Outside, Upside Down,” and many others.  Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys and Hollister Mysteries are all worth the read for young readers. (I am afraid I now have Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? stuck in my head.  Along with all the noises we used to describe what he could do.)  These are the memories both you and any child you read to will remember.

Giving a child the love of reading is giving them a gift that goes on forever!!
