As much as I love to paint, I have a limited amount of talent.
I don’t let my lack of talent stop me from doing something I love. When I paint my quilts, I carefully draw the figures that are on the piece of material I chose for the backing of the quilt, cars, planes, Dr. Seuss etc… By using a grid, I copy the figures making them much larger. With a pencil I draw the enlarged figures on the front piece of white material. Then I carefully mix the paint until I match the original colors.
When I did the picture above, I had a set of directions and paints to guide each and every brush stroke. Because I followed the directions and stayed in the lines, the picture turned out just like the example that was given.
Two important parts of each of these processes are, a quiet place to work, and plenty of light. If you can’t see the lines, you cannot very well stay inside them.
Our lives are like a blank canvas. We are given a set of directions, and plenty of light to see our way. When we veer off the path, we move away from the light, and we can get lost in the darkness. With prayer, God will steer us back to the light and the path that is straight. Following the right path will assure us of arriving at the desired destination.
The Bible is a road map to life. It guides us to stay on the right path, or in the lines, if you will. The instructions are easy to understand and follow. If for some reason, I lose my place, it will tell me how to return to the right course. It doesn’t promise that there won’t be any rocks or bumps on the road. Things like that are true of any path. However, He promised never to leave us and will always be there to pick us up if we stumble and fall. What a comfort that is to know.
We as writers face a blank canvas every day when we sit in front of our computers, journals, or pieces of paper. Make sure you have enough light to see what you are doing.
