Have you ever used the expression, “I must have been out of my mind!”?

Well, I have.  Or maybe yours might have been, “What was I thinking?”

If truth be known, you weren’t!  Sometimes, we just don’t think.  We say things and do things without any thought of who is listening or who is watching.  The term, “Little pictures have big ears.”,  is very true.  How we act and what we say are the very first things learned by our children.  They try to sit like us, or walk and talk like us.  As infants, they mimic our words of admonishment, like ‘no, no’.

If you borrow something from a neighbor, how do you return it?  Scratched and dirty, or clean and polished? When someone gives you a job to do, is your attempt at the job halfhearted, as you grumble your way through it?  How do you keep your own things, like home, car, or personal possessions?  Are they clean, polished and tidy? Put it their proper places?  Everything we do, our children will copy.  Is your car first runner up in the pig pen on wheels contest?  Are there things growing under the back seat?  The best thing we can do for our children, is show them, by example, that work can be fun.  While you are cleaning your car, let them clean theirs.  If you are cleaning up the yard, or picking up apples and leaves, let them help with their own little rake, shovel and wagon.  Believe me these are good investments.

If you apply these simple things to your daily life, your children will mirror you behavior and attitude.   Then you will not be caught saying ‘What was I thinking,’ or ‘if only’, as you look back, and try to figure out what went wrong in raising your children.  Why  don’t they take care of their toys, or possessions?  Why do they have such an angry or negative, attitude all the time?  Remember, your children are a product of their environment.  And, you are in charge of quality control!

 

As writers, we work better in a clean organized (or controlled chaos), area.  Don’t make excuses!  Clean up the mess and become more productive!
