How many of us have lost a parent?

   

Have you succumbed to the tears of grief?  Or did you try to keep a stiff upper lip?  How did the loss affect your life?  Losing a parent or grandparent, is often considered the natural order of things.  Is that supposed to make it hurt less?  These people were intricate parts of our lives.  How did we treat them when they were alive?  Did we do as the Bible commands, and honor them? Or are we so busy, we can’t be bothered or find the time to call them?   Do we laugh and scoff at their wisdom, thinking it is old fashioned?

     Honoring our parents and grandparents is one of the Ten Commandments.  That means God put a lot of stock in this relationship.  One of the last things Jesus did while hanging on the cross, was to secure the welfare of his mother.

     Mother’s Day is past, and Father’s Day is fast approaching.  Let’s teach our children to love and respect their parents and grandparents.  The best way is by being their example.  I don’t mean one day a year, when we give them a card and a gift they will never use, but every day.

     When the time of their passing comes, let our tears celebrate a life well lived.  Not those of a life consisting of missed opportunities and regrets.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

      When my dad died, I thought my heart would break.  But I have the unshakable knowledge that I will see him again as promised in the Bible.

     As writers let’s bring back the love of hearth and home.  Let’s make it our mission to write about love and respect for our parents and grandparents.

     Or when the time comes, will you drown in a sea of tears?

Exodus 20:12  Honor thy father and thy mother : that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
