That may be something we learned and have taught to our children to protect them from bullies. I think it works, to a certain extent. It is not true in all cases.
A child’s heart is a tender thing. We as parents are supposed to be the protector of this fragile organ. It may be able to take harsh words from outside sources, but a mother’s and father’s words should never be said with the intention to hurt, cut down or intimidate. This does not mean you are not to reprimand your children. In fact there are many references in the Bible, instructing us to do just that. But, we are to be their instructors, guides, and protectors.
I have heard, it takes one hundred words of affirmation to counter act one word said in malice. They do not need another bully in their life. They need a safe haven.
We as writers often fall into the temptation of using today’s vanacular. Be careful, you may be arming a bully and breaking another’s heart.
