Do you remember when you were a kid?

 

Every other word was Mom.  Even before you knew how to put your desires into words, your mother knew what your cries meant and satisfied your needs.  Then it was mommy, I have a boo boo. Or mommy I want a snack.

She reminded you to put on your hat and mittens, and untangled your shoe laces.  She washed your face and your clothes and never expected any reward or acknowledgement for these acts of love.  She worked tirelessly on your school project or Halloween costume, only to have it discarded like yesterday’s newspaper when you were done.  While you blossomed into the best person you could be, she faded.  Her youth spent on the children she loved more than life.

So what comes next?  Now that the bloom is off the rose?  Does she also get discarded like yesterday’s news?

As parents we need to teach our children how to honor and respect their parents and grandparents.  There in the Bible it tells us to requite, or repay them for their years of love and devotion.  We must let them see how we behave toward our own parents.  How we must trade places with them and become their care givers. Jesus saw to his mother’s wellbeing on the cross.  He made sure she would be respected and looked after.  Often circumstances won’t allow us to keep our loved ones at home with us.  So teach your children, your responsibility doesn’t end when the loved ones are placed into a care facility.  Make daily or weekly visits, and read, color, sing together, or call daily.  Have your children participate! Don’t ever let your children learn to warehouse our loved ones, remember, your next.

We as authors have the opportunity to make older people heroes in our stories.  What a novel idea. Give it a whirl.

Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

I Timothy 5:1-4
