WORDS, WORDS, WORDS!

Have you ever given your word to someone and not honored it?

How did that make you feel? Did you feel anything at all? Maybe your response was, ‘oh, well,’ and not have given it anymore thought. It use to be, in this country, a man’s word was his bond.  He was bound, ‘placed under legal or moral restraints or obligation, by what he said. He didn’t have to be sued or summoned to court to honor his word. It was a matter of pride and reputation.

I love the musical, MY FAIR LADY, in it Liza sings, ‘WORDS! WORDS! WORDS! I’m so sick of words! I hear words all day through; first from him, now from you! Is that all you blighters can do? Her exasperation comes from words with no action. She wants  to know there is something behind the words as she expresses, ‘show me now!’  The adage ‘Talk is cheap.’ rings truer now than ever before. People are no longer honor bound to keep their word.

We are so fortunate that we have a God who doesn’t change, he is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.  His Word is true, and it also never changes. We can rest in the promises he has given us in his Word, The Holy Bible.

As parents we need to teach our children to honor their word. To say what they mean and mean what they say.  The best way of doing this is by example. Do not promise your child something and not follow through.  No matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you, to them it will mean never to trust anything you say to them. Teach them they can believe not only what you say, but every word written in the Bible.

We as writers are in love with words.  We know firsthand words without action accomplishes nothing. May we always be honor bound by our words!

The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

Psalms 12:1-8
