Did you ever experience puppy love?

How do you think that term ever came about?  Well, maybe because it is hard not to have your heart melt when you see a helpless little puppy.  The same way your heart melted when you fell in love the first time.  Life seemed perfect then, you had your whole life planned.  What happened? He sits across the breakfast table at looks at the smerf pjs , or she sits with the unshaved guy behind the newspaper, maybe staring at the TV and wonder how you got to this place?  That is the million dollar question, what happened?

The first thing that happened is life intruded into your perfect world.  And we all know, life can be messy.  Trying to juggle cooking, laundry, school, activities etc… doesn’t leave much time for beauty treatments.  Or trying to make an impression at work so you get the promotion which comes with a pay raise, can be exhausting.  The point is, most couples quit talking about anything except their troubles. They quit writing silly love poems, or buying flowers.  If asked how you like the dinner, you grunt, ‘it’s okay’, talk about a buzz kill.

My husband bought me the fountain in the picture, said it reminded him of us. It is a constant reminder of where we started.  To make any marriage last is work.  Wake up! Really see what each other is doing.  Offer help to one another.  Sometimes it is hard to talk at the table while all the children are commanding the air space, but how about while doing the dishes, or sitting on the porch.  Turn off the television.  Make sure you have a date night, away from the troubles and the reminders of everything you have to do at home.  It is easy to find someone attractive when they are not attached to the mess life can hand you.  So, don’t let the communications break down.  Deal with the problems before they are unsurmountable.  It is easy to build a wall, not so easy to tear down.  Fix it while the mortar is still wet and it comes down much easier.

We live in a throw away society.  The love of our youth should not be one of the things discarded.  Fight for it.  Be the couple celebrating their 50th anniversary.  Now that is an accomplishment.

As parents, you need to let your children see the love and devotion that brought you together.   And be careful never to use your children as pawns. How will they ever make the right choices for themselves if they have no role model?  Anything worth having is worth fighting for, so fight to keep you marriage alive.  It will be one of the greatest gifts you give your children.

We as writers tend to make love and sex synonymous.  Let’s try to make love attractive even if it gets messy.  We can do a lot to keep marriages from ending up in the landfill.

 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
