DO YOU HAVE A DUTY?

What are some of the duties you have?

When you fly on an air plane one of the first things that happens is you get a brief safety lesson.  In those instructions, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first so you are then able to help others.  It is her duty to tell you that and your duty to listen and to comply if needs be.

The dictionary defines duty as, ‘an act or a course of action that is required of one by position, social custom, law, or religion: Required action or service: Moral or legal obligation: A compulsion felt to meet such obligation: A tax charged by a government, especially on imports.

So, are you compelled by one of these definitions to act as duty dictates?  Well, if you are called into service for you country, it is your duty to serve and protect. If you are a Boy Scout your motto is:  On my honor, I will do my best,  To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;  To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

Girl Scouts promise to basically the same things.

Are you a teacher, where you are compelled to teach? Or a therapist, where the duty of patient confidentially must be respected?  Or a preacher where you are duty bound to tell people their fate without God?

As parents we have a duty to teach our children to love God, their families, and their country. To teach them to live the way the Bible tells them, and treat others the way they want to be treated. Are we taking this duty serious?

We as writers are very conscious of what the duties of our characters are supposed to be. What we do with that knowledge is up to us, both in our stories and in our own lives.

The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:10-13
