ONOMATOPOEIA

It says its name!

Now that is a long word to describe a simple thing. Taken from the late Latin and Greek; onoma=name, poiein=to make. The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it, i.e. buzz, hiss etc. The use of words whose sound suggest the sense. There are just some words that say their name, like sizzle, bang, pop, splat, weep, and the list goes on and on.

Think about how many times a day you use an onomatopoeia.  When you stub your toe you say, ouch. You hum, sneeze, sip, slurp, scratch, sniff, cough, and your shoes click on the floor, your stomach rumbles, you belch.  All these thing say what they are and what you are experiencing.

When you watch your children or grandchildren play, you hear and see all types of onomatopoeias, like, wee, giggle, ha, eek, bump, boo hoo, whispers, howls, screeches, and squeals. Laughter, is a beautiful sound of its own.

Did you know there will be onomatopoeias after we are dead? That’s right, there will be sounds of agony and joy, depending on whether or not you are bound for eternal light or eternal darkness.  The Bible tells us there will be weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth for all eternity for those who are doomed to the lake of fire. Where as in heaven, there will be singing, laughter, praising and dancing for those who accept Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. It says its name, joy or weeping, which will it be for you?

As parents we need to be there for our children when they experience an onomatopoeia, like pain, suffering or joy. When we have to punish or chastise our children, the Bible tells us not to give in to their crying, because they will not die. We are trying to instruction them, in that every action has a consequence. Disobedience will bring chastisement, obedience will bring rewards. Just like when this life is over, obedience will bring eternal life, and disobedience brings eternal damnation. Important lessons to learn.

We as authors love to use onomatopoeias in our writings, Dr. Seuss being the master! They are words that describe in one word, which would take a paragraph to expound on. Just as the afterlife, will be either filled with sounds that are undesirable or sounds of pure joy. I am already practicing my singing!

There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

Luke 13:28

And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 13:42

And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25:30

The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Psalms 112:10

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Psalms 100:1-2
