BE A MENTOR

Live what you believe

Growing up we learn childhood songs and poems that just seem to stick with us for a lifetime. I think if each and every one of you access the recesses of your mind you will find a memory of the following poem. Not sure of where you heard it, or how you learned it, it just seems part of your permanent memory. It’s a simple little poem that goes like this:

 Mrs. J. A. Carney (1845)

Little drops of water
Little grains of sand
Make the mighty ocean
And the beauteous land

Little deeds of kindness,
Little words of love,
Make our earth an Eden,
Like the heaven above

And the little moments,
Humble though they be,
Make the mighty ages.
Of eternity.

You at least have to ask yourself why you remember at least the first four lines of this simple ditty. My thought is because in its simplicity, it is profoundly accurate. One drop of water, or one grain of sand doesn’t make much of an impression, but together with other little drops of water and little grains of sand, monumental things can happen.

And so it should be with our lives on a daily basis, one act of kindness may not mean much in itself, but coupled with a lifetime of living acts of kindness every day, makes a universal statement. It is important to live the life that you believe in, the values, and the faith, for the younger generation to see on a daily basis, so they too, will want to believe. You can’t send out mixed signals of being sweet and kind one day, and a banshee the next.

Believe it or not someone is watching you, and you are a leader. You may not think so, but the things you say and do, can have a profound effect on other people. How you handle anger, stress, disappointment, sadness, and pride, all these can be tiny messages to whomever is watching you. There may come a time when that person who is watching you may need your support, advice, and encouragement. You may question your ability to give such advice, or to be a leader of anyone. But if you live by the faith you believe, (that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved), and have a sincere heart, you can inspire others with wisdom, grace, and encouragement, because you know God will love and guide you, and is working in you to be a good influence.

As parents our greatest influence is on our children because they are exposed to our daily actions. It is imperative therefore that we stay in the Word of God to live the life God would have us live and be the examples He taught. We also need to help our children learn how to live a Christ like life. He gave us the handbook, all’s we have to do is read it, and teach it.

We as authors, more than likely, write about the lives we wish we had, instead of the ones we lead. It is a simple fix, live an exemplary life, for the Bible tells us the greatest commandment in the Bible is love one another. They say it takes more muscles in the face to frown than it does to smile. You’ll never know who is watching, or reading for that matter. Something to think about.

 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

Titus 2:3

Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Colossians 4:6

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

I Peter 5:5

One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.

Psalms 145:4

Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

Psalms 71:18
