Which do you strive for?
This is the last weekend before the children go back to school, if they haven’t already begun. Knowing getting back into a schedule will take a little time, you wonder if you should make this weekend a lot of fun and family time, or time to get organized and give the children extra rest. You will gain wisdom from this decision in one of two ways; 1. By having a terrific weekend with the kids, they return tired, and will get up late, find it hard to concentrate, and not give their best on their first day, or 2. You have a low-keyed weekend, the kids will get a lot of rest, and will bounce out of bed excited about going back to school, to have a great day. One type of wisdom is gained by learning from what not to do, while the other type of wisdom is making the right decision in the first place. It is times like these when we all wish we had the Wisdom of Solomon, so we would know what to do and not regret our decisions. Lucky for us the Bible tells us; If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5. We all have areas in our lives that we wish we knew how to handle wisely. It could be a situation at work, or with the difficult teen, it might even be in the relationship we have with a loved one. When you approach God with your situation, you must go with a willing heart to hear what He has to say. The best place to hear God is through His Word. By spending time with God in His Word you are allowing Him to teach you His ways.
The wisdom you find in God’s Word can save you time, energy, even money. It can even save your life, and result in blessings you never imagined. The wisdom that comes from God is first of all pure, it is peace-loving and considerate, it is submissive and full of mercy, and it is impartial, sincere, and real. You can have the wisdom of the world, and think you know everything, and only end up regretting half of the decisions you make, or you can prayerfully ask for the wisdom of God and increase your odds considerably on having a peace-loving, considerate life.
As parents we wish we had all the answers, but in reality we do not. That is why it is important we begin and end each day with fervent prayers to God for wisdom and guidance. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. We are not perfect parents, and never will be, but with God’s help we can be godly parents and give our children the best start in life they can possibly have.
We as authors, often put a wise old sage in our writings. Someone who has lived long enough and gone through enough that they have gleaned much wisdom along the road of life. We often say we obtained our wisdom in the school of hard knocks. Wouldn’t we be better off listening to God, and not getting knocked around so much?
And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
I Kings 4:29
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
Job 28:28
How much better is it to get wisdom than gold!
and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
Proverbs 16:16
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
James 3:13-18
